25 things

I’m hopping on the 25 things party train!

Let’s see…I’m supposed to list 25 random things. Random? I can do random with my hands tied behind my back. Random is my middle name. Just kidding, it’s Aimee.

1. Speaking of my middle name, my mother wanted to name me Aimee Susan Snider. Then it occurred to her that my sweet southern monograms wouldn’t be so sweet with those initials. So she switched it to Susan Aimee. Initials: SAS. Much more fitting. At least I like to think so. πŸ˜‰

2. I like this photo of Hannah and I because it is one of the few photos taken at precisely the right angle to hide my 27 chins.

3. Back at the beginning of January, I gave up Diet Coke. Cold Turkey. From 6-8 cans of fizzy goodness per day to zilch, nada, zip. Now it’s all water, all the time. My joints are thanking me.

4. Jake (who I call my baby, but he is the oldest) is graduating in June and will head off to college (probably Auburn) this fall. My heart will shatter into a million tiny pieces.

5. My husband and I met on a blind date. We were set up by a mutual guy friend who told me we were PERFECT for each other. We are celebrating our 20th anniversary next month. Alan, you couldn’t have been more right.

6. I love country music. But then again, there aren’t many types of music I don’t like.

7. If I could be anything, it would be a wildlife photographer.

8. We have lived in Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida, Utah, Colorado, Connecticut, Canada, and Illinois. I have so many memories and friends from each and every place and I wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything.

9. One of our greatest parenting accomplishments is that our kids have incredible manners. Yes ma’am, no ma’am, yes sir, no sir are the only acceptable responses. No yeps, yeahs, or uh-huh’s around here. Please, thank you and excuse me are used frequently. People ask me all the time how I got such polite children. The obvious answer is that we taught them to be polite from the time they could talk. But the REAL answer is one of my best parenting secrets EVER, bribery. When my kids were little and we’d go out in public, the rule was that if they got complimented on their manners/behavior by total strangers (waiters, cashiers, doctors, nurses, receptionists, etc.) they would get a surprise. Nothing big, some little toy from the dollar section but boy did it work. And all these years later, I still get comments about how polite my kids are. They rock.

10. I cannot wait till spring/summer. When the hockey rink thaws out we are going to turn that whole area into a garden. We’ve had tiny ones before, but this one is going to be awesome. If you have any tips/websites/resources on organic gardening…please comment!

11. I’m getting the new puppy itch. Riley needs a friend. A pal to run and galavant with. Muffin doesn’t run. Or galavant. She is a lazy lump of fur.

12. Garage sale season is right around the corner. Is it weird that I’m so excited about it?

13. I drive a pickup truck. It was originally my husband’s but I “borrowed” it constantly for my business. So he traded in my suv and got something else, so the truck is officially mine. I love it. Josh, my 13 year old? Not so much. He says it’s embarrassing to be picked up by his mom in a pickup.

14. Maybe the fact that it is usually filled with furniture and/or roadside rescues has something to do with it?

15. My hubby refers to me as Sanford (the junk dealer from Sanford and Son). My cellphone ringtone is the theme from Sanford and Son. It’s a catchy little tune and makes me smile every time it rings.

16. I will be 44 this summer. For me, the 40’s brought strength, confidence and freedom. I spent way too many years worrying about what other people think.

17. My degree is in elementary education. I taught in public and private schools for several years and then home schooled my own children for five years. I loved homeschooling my children but could probably never teach other people’s children again.

18. I think Gilmore Girls was the best show on television. Hands down. Hannah and I have the whole DVD set and can recite lines like nobody’s business.

19. My mom arrived yesterday for a visit. She is so much fun. Things that I’ve never heard come out of her mouth? No, I don’t feel like it…No, just go without me. Β All I have to say is “Hey mom, do you want to…” And she’s reaching for her shoes and halfway out the door.

20. Urban Farmgirl (Mary) is now selling her ahhmazing vintage goods at Tattered Tiques. I had the pleasure of meeting her there yesterday. I got my first “pay check” and turned right around and basically handed it to Mary. You should see the goodies I bought from her! I have a feeling this will be a pattern!

21. I have lost about 10 pounds since January. Probably because the ginormous jar of peanut m&m’s in the kitchen has been dumped and refilled with almonds. And because of #3. And I’m eating healthy. Now if only I could be as passionate about exercise as I am about blogging. Newsflash…blogging doesn’t make your butt smaller.

22. Technically, it’s now probably only 23 chins.

23. My favorite shake-your-groove-thang song ever is Brick House by the Commodores. It is physically impossible to remain still while that song plays. Many spontaneous family dance parties have occurred in our kitchen to that song.

24. Super Freak, by Rick James is a close second.

25. Life is good. My heart is overflowing. I’m blessed beyond measure.

Linking up hereΒ at Shaunna’s 25 things party!

  1. #21- That’s so unfair, isn’t it? If anyone figures out a way to lose weight while reading blogs I’ll be all over it!

Can you come over to play? Yes, ma’am we could be friends. See, I have good manners too. Any who, I love garage sales, loooove Gilmore Girls, love being 44, love calling my oldest my baby, and last but not least I live in Chicagoland. Sometime soon I hope to get into Tattered Tiques and hope to meet you and Urban Farmgirl. My face will turn red and I will probably be overly excited when this happens. I am actually so excited about Tattered Tiques that I recently had a dream that a new Tattered Tiques opened up in Hinsdale which would be much closer to me. Dreams can come true, right?

    February 10, 2012
    • It’s on, Brenda. A playmate for sure once the weather warms up!!! πŸ™‚

So…gave up diet soda and your joints are thanking you? Really? What’s the story there? Might have to think about doing the same. How long do you think it was until you noticed feeling differently…well, beside maybe REALLY wanting a soda a little later on?

    You’re wonderful Susan! Great post!

  8. Love this and getting to know you better. I must say that I’m a Super Freak fan, had 25 chins until last February (I lost 30 lbs~found 5 of them at Christmas), and I would love to drive a truck. Have a great weekend!

ps we have a condo 20 miles from Auburn on Lake Martin~if you need a place to stay when you visit! (my husband graduated from Auburn)

    February 10, 2012
    • That is so encouraging, I have many more to go. Lake Martin is so beautiful and that is so incredibly kind of you! War Eagle!

  9. Love your list…especially #9. It’s so nice to hear that good manners are being bribed, rather taught πŸ™‚ We do the same with our girls…it’s great when you hear them being polite with people outside the house…all that teaching does pay off.

    Congrats on your weight loss!

    February 10, 2012
    • Thanks so much. Yes, I’m a firm believer that when used correctly bribery is the key to good parenting! πŸ˜‰

this feel strange to write to someone i have never met (and probably will never get the chance to), but i am just certain if we lived near each other we’d be friends! don’t suppose you’re planning on moving to a tiny town in western canada? ha! thanks for keeping it real and for sharing all your creative endeavors!

    February 10, 2012
    • I’ll bet we would too, Tracy! You just never know. We loved every minute of living in Canada!

Congratulations Susan … quit Diet Coke … how do you do that? I have tried so many times and as soon as I have a sip I’m hooked again. What do they put in that stuff to make it so addictive?

    February 10, 2012
    • Aspartame is very addictive and very bad for you. That is why I finally gave it up. I went Cold Turkey (I’m a very all or nothing person). Honestly, I feel so much better drinking water that I don’t even miss it.

Love these get to know you posts. Have you watched Hart of Dixie on the CW network? Stumbled on it a couple of weeks ago and have been watching back episodes. Really like it. Def has that Gilmore Girls feel.

    February 10, 2012
    • Rachel, yes I’ve seen it a couple of times. I need to start watching it again. I think they need to start GG again, but a next generation kind of thing with Rory grown up or something. Although, it’s probably one of those things that can never be duplicated.

Hi Susan, I am not much of a commenter…but have to say, since you live in the (southern) northern burbs, you HAVE to go to Planter’s Pallet for the gardening season. LOVE it. And if you want to go a bit farther down the road, The Growing Place in Naperville or Montgomery are also wonderful places. They all have display gardens in place and the people KNOW their stuff! Rosie

    February 11, 2012
    • Thank you so much, Rosie! I will go to those places for sure. πŸ™‚

      February 11, 2012
  15. I also drive a truck, loved my 40’s and have all seasons of GG.

    February 11, 2012
    • Donna…nice to know I’m not the only truck-drivin mama! πŸ˜‰

      February 11, 2012
  16. Ah! You are so delightful! I have learned so much from you in the few months that I have been following your blog! I stumbled on it while looking for an advent calendar idea and there hasn’t been a single post that I haven’t enjoyed! You’re fantastic! So many things you say resonate with me (an all or nothing person/you’re a former teacher, I’m forging along to get my elementary ed. degree and on and on.) I’ve referenced you in my blog and I rave about you on my facebook, so hopefully I am sending some fans your way!

    February 11, 2012
    • Amanda, that is one on the sweetest comments I’ve ever received. Thank you so much…it means a lot. πŸ™‚

Your 25 things really made my day. I too love diet coke and have 27 chins. Your manners technique is by far the most creative I have heard. Do you think my 13 year old would go for a toy. Lol. My dream is to craft like you do and make money doing what I love. Thank you for making me smile and truly inspiring me in more ways than one. I anxiously await all your posts! God is good!!!

    February 11, 2012
    • Melissa, thanks for the super-nice comment…it made my day! πŸ™‚

Felt a little strange reading this. I could list many of these random things on my list! Except the A.S.S. initials!! You need to thank your mom! πŸ™‚

    February 11, 2012
  19. I loved this post! I had to chuckle when you talked about your name, because one of my very best friends has the not-so-desirable initials you spoke of. πŸ™‚ I will have to give a go to the 25 random things. I never know what might come out of my head!

    February 12, 2012
  20. I recently read a couple articles about Diet Coke. Although, they didn’t really tell me anything I didn’t know, I’m strongly thinking, I need to give it up. 😦 Makes me so sad. So you really noticed a difference with your joints? I know they are not good for me and I would save a lot of money.

I love comments. Thank you for taking the time to comment!
