sleeping porch project

So we have this incredible sleeping porch over the screened porch. It is right off of my dressing room.

Can you see the potential???

I can.

The problem? The photos above were taken before we moved in last May. It was niiiiiice and empty.

Now?

Not so much. Up until now, I’ve been referring to this room as “the stockroom.” Β I keep all of my overflow accessories in there.

Now before you get all judgemental πŸ˜‰ and call TLC and tell them you have a prime candidate for an episode of Hoarders…let me plead my case.

I plead insanity…I’m crazy about decor! πŸ˜‰ Just kidding.

We have moved 12 times in 20 years. TWELVE! That’s a lot of houses to decorate, people. We’d move in, live there anywhere from 6 months to four years (but on average 2 years) and then move to a different house with a completely different style, size, layout, feel, etc. Nuff said.

So today, my mom and I got in there and did some serious weeding out. Loads of things will be donated! My mom found some goodies that will work well in her house. The rest I will either keep (not much) or sell.

See that mack-daddy collection of vintage globes? They were all used in theΒ libraryΒ in our last house but I have no need for them here. Those will be coming up to Tattered Tiques very soon!

Everything is going to be relocated to the basement on Friday, because my kids are out of school and I certainly wouldn’t want them to be bored or anything.

We are gonna have a little Love Boat (one of my favorite childhood shows) reenactment. You betcha.

The role of “Julie McCoy, Cruise Director” will be played by moi. And the role of “Gopher” will be played by my three teenagers.

Our Port of Call will not be Puerto Vallarta but the little-known isle of stanky basement. There might even be souvenir t-shirts. πŸ˜‰

I tell them not to think of it so much as work, as it is making memories.

And once the sleeping porch is back to square one…it’s gonna get a major facelift. Like Joan Rivers, major.

In its future??? Fresh paint, for starters. Then, a french bed, ruffly white linens, a chandy, an antique mirrored armoire, some gauzy white panels across all the windows. You feelin me?

It’s going to be heavenly.

    About your globes…..
I used to look for them and paint them. I would do a simple translucent blue wash over the globe and then paint Santa with his sleigh and reindeer.
Others I would paint with a black wash, so just a little of the maps were showing and I would paint a witch on a broomstick…….

  6. Just for a nano second I got all judgmental about the globes….and then BAM…I remembered the 2 million white pitchers I have stored away until I am ready to display and use again and I almost slapped myself. That made me remember MY basement and how it looks worse than your porch and I giggled…..silly me.

  13. OK, I’m gonna need to see some kind of architectural layout of this manse you live in.
First it was the “I just stumbled upon an enormous guest house out back that I’ve turned into a magazine perfect workroom!”

And now its “oh, did I mention there is an enormous, light filled sleeping porch on the back of the house? No? Oh, well, then I should mention there is an enormous light-filled sleeping porch on the back of the mansion.”

Are there any more outbuildings or or perhaps maid’s quarters or wings we should know about going forward?

That room is going to be beautiful. Can’t wait to see what you do with it.

PS: If your husband is away I can totally fill in for Captain Stubing. My resemblance is, well,……upsetting. Or I can just be Charro in a pinch.

  15. Green with envy over your amazing globe collection πŸ™‚ Seeing Coldplay at the United Center in August and my husband and I are heading down from NE Wisconsin a day early just to come do some shopping at Tattered Tiques! Excited beyond words, not sure if it’s Coldplay or getting to come shop at such an awesome looking place πŸ™‚ Hoping to find some other places along the route to make it a real adventure, if you have any recommendations they would be greatly appreciated! Not to sound all “blog stalkerish”, but I can’t wait to see your items there :)(hope you’ll still be selling there) Love all your inspiring photos/amazing pieces, you are one of my fave daily reads! I do have to say my 2 top favorites are the blue sideboard and the card catalog, ah-maze-ing! One more thing, I also found your diet coke to water and m&ms to almonds post very courageous, as I gave up sugar and nearly all diet coke only to have a late night Walgreens trip turn into a trip off the wagon as I indulged in a frosty fizzy bottle of diet coke along with a Delish(brand name) red velvet cupcake, which I anticipated to taste like its packaging only to find that it was nothing short of heavenly divine πŸ™‚ I apologize for the long post, but sometimes when I start typing I can’t shut up, so thanks for all the sharing and inspiring and hop you had a great Valentines day πŸ˜€
