Roadside Rescue Reveal!

Earlier today I found this chest by the side of the road. She was abandoned and alone, destined for the dump.  Much to my sons’ mortification, I pulled over and loaded that baby up.  By. myself.  I’m sure my boys would have helped me had they not been on the floorboard  for fear that out of the blue one of their friends would appear and see that they have a trash pickin’ mama.

Anyhoo…once I left the chiropractor’s office 😉  I brought her home and got to work. I sanded, skipped the primer, and painted everything except the top with my new favoritest color EVER…Sherwin Williams’ Sea Salt.  It is the most beautiful calming shade.  It’s a paint color with an identity crisis.  It doesn’t know whether it is blue, green or gray.  But it so pretty that it doesn’t even care.  Layla from The Lettered Cottage (love) uses it a lot and Sherwin Williams is having a sale this week so I thought I’d give it a whirl.  OM goodness.

The wood on the chest was decent with some wear around the corners of the top drawer.  But the top was this gorgeous wood with a beautiful grain just begging to be stained.  I sanded it with 220 grit, applied Minwax pre-stain conditioner, let it sit for 15 minutes and then applied Minwax Dark Walnut stain.  It only took one coat to get the look I was after.

I didn’t sand the edges of the chest, but I used a glaze all over to age it a bit and to camouflage some of the imperfections.

I added sweet wooden knobs that I got at Hobby Lobby’s 50% off sale a few weeks ago.  I’ve been waiting for the right piece to come along for those knobs and this was it.

And here she is all beautified.
