Roadside Rescue Reveal!
Earlier today I found this chest by the side of the road. She was abandoned and alone, destined for the dump. Much to my sons’ mortification, I pulled over and loaded that baby up. By. myself. I’m sure my boys would have helped me had they not been on the floorboard for fear that out of the blue one of their friends would appear and see that they have a trash pickin’ mama.
Anyhoo…once I left the chiropractor’s office 😉 I brought her home and got to work. I sanded, skipped the primer, and painted everything except the top with my new favoritest color EVER…Sherwin Williams’ Sea Salt. It is the most beautiful calming shade. It’s a paint color with an identity crisis. It doesn’t know whether it is blue, green or gray. But it so pretty that it doesn’t even care. Layla from The Lettered Cottage (love) uses it a lot and Sherwin Williams is having a sale this week so I thought I’d give it a whirl. OM goodness.
The wood on the chest was decent with some wear around the corners of the top drawer. But the top was this gorgeous wood with a beautiful grain just begging to be stained. I sanded it with 220 grit, applied Minwax pre-stain conditioner, let it sit for 15 minutes and then applied Minwax Dark Walnut stain. It only took one coat to get the look I was after.
I didn’t sand the edges of the chest, but I used a glaze all over to age it a bit and to camouflage some of the imperfections.
I added sweet wooden knobs that I got at Hobby Lobby’s 50% off sale a few weeks ago. I’ve been waiting for the right piece to come along for those knobs and this was it.
I have been looking all over trying to find a free or rather cheap fixer upper of a dresser and have had no luck. Thank you for sharing how you painted the dresser. Looks great!
Visiting from Tatertots and Jello…
Love this, I have a dresser in my garage that is in need of a makeover, thanks for the inspiration!
Would love for you to link up on my blog linky party!
This is gorgeous! I am so jealous! I never find anything nice like that curbside..Maybe I should cruise different neighborhoods.
Great Job! She is beautiful.
Very nice work, I’m sure one day your boys will appreciate your good eye!
Amazing! I can’t believe how quickly you got it finished. It looks fabulous!
It looks so beautiful; what a treasure you found!

Oh my heavens I nearly just fell over… GOR GEOUS! I just painted a vanity (?) stool/seat/thing with Sea Salt this week. LOVE. I heart Layla and Miss Mustard Seed. They both use sea salt. When I first painted it on I thought it looked green (I wanted blue) but then after I stained it… blue. Amazing.
Last week my fourteen yr old daughter sweetly said “There really should be a limit on how much someone can pick up out of a ditch.” LOL
“because they were on the floorboard”… that is gonna be good for SEVERAL belly laughs this weekend. Kids. LOL
Once I cover the seat cushion I’ll have to blog about my ditch diving re-do.
I love what you did with it! I am cracking up about your sons…mine do the same thing. LOL.
Over from Shabby Nest… what a fabulous after! I really love that you ‘saved’ the wood top! Gorgeous indeed.
It is amazing what you can find on the side of the road and I am more amazed that you did this in one day! I always have projects piling up around the house before I get around to fixing them up. You did a fantastic job fixing up this dresser! It is so beautiful now!
IT turned out so beautiful. That woodgrain is just perfect. I giggled when you mentioned how embarrassed your boys were. My 10 year old saw a desk on the side of the road the other day & begged me to pick it up, lol 🙂
Just beautiful!
Wow, now this one is purdy!! I’m lovin’ the two toned finish too. Really lovely!

Hello, gorgeous is right! WHAT a transformation! Thank you for sharing!
What an amazing transformation! It looks brand new! Saw you at Metamorphoses Monday!!!
Wow! I’m amazed at this transformation. I think I would have gone the all-white route but this looks so much better with the stained top. Well done!
This is so beautiful! I love the top being stained so you can see the wood grain. LOVE it!
Wow! What a beautiful transformation! You took her from 1970 to 2010! Love the color of the paint, too. I’ll have to keep that one in mind for my next project. And oh yes…that woodgrain on top is fabulous! Great job!
Happy MM!

Love it! My kids are quite used to their dumpster diving mom by now! Great job!!
So lovely! I’m glad you saved it from the dump!!!
Thats a pretty nice side of the road find! Great finishing on it, Heidi
The wood grain on the top is really the show stopper here. Thanks for linking up to My dear trash. Nice job
I had to laugh about your boys. That would be where one of my boys would be, on the floor, hiding from any potential passerbys. My 8-yr-old might try showing off his muscles and lift it himself. Makes me want to drive around on a social experiment.
This is gorgeous!! I love the subtle color and finish. Hey, no shame in trash pickin!! Thanks SO much for linking up to Style Feature Saturday!! -shaunna 🙂
It looks great! What kind of glaze did you use? I wish I could find some roadside leftovers!
